Athletic Bilbao Reveal New Release Clause for Nico Williams
Mansion Sports - Earlier this summer, Barcelona came close to securing the signature of Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao after expressing their willingness to trigger his release clause.
The Catalan giants were reportedly prepared to spend €58 million to complete the deal. However, the move ultimately fell through, and the Spanish international instead opted to sign a new 10-year contract with Athletic at San Mamés.
Initially, Barcelona had no plans to pursue Williams this summer, particularly after he turned down a move to the club 12 months earlier.
But when his agent signaled an openness to negotiations, the Blaugrana began to take decisive steps.
Personal terms were reportedly agreed in principle, yet before Barcelona could activate his release clause, the 22-year-old forward changed his mind and committed his long-term future to Bilbao.
Release Clause Increases Significantly
Williams’ new contract includes a substantial increase in his release clause. Whereas Barcelona could have acquired him for €58 million under his previous deal, the price to lure him away from Athletic has now risen to approximately €90 million, according to ED.
Barcelona Shut the Door for Good
Following two consecutive failed attempts in the summers of 2024 and 2025, Barcelona have reportedly decided they will no longer pursue Williams in the future.
The combination of his elevated release clause and the club’s current financial challenges makes any potential move increasingly unrealistic.
Interest from the Premier League
Although the €90 million clause presents a considerable obstacle, Premier League clubs are still believed to be potential suitors, given their previous interest in the player over recent years. That said, there is currently no indication that any club is prepared to meet the fee, especially as Williams himself appears committed to staying at Bilbao after signing such a lengthy contract.
High Expectations for the New Season
Athletic Bilbao are understandably delighted to have secured one of their most important players for the long term.
The club hopes that Williams will deliver standout performances and make a significant impact during the 2025–26 season, further solidifying his status as a cornerstone of their squad.
