Mansion Sports - Real Madrid have completed four signings in the current summer transfer window. 

However, their attention has now shifted to strengthening the defensive midfield position, which the club views as a key area requiring reinforcement. 

Addressing the issues that emerged in the deep midfield last season is deemed essential as Xabi Alonso prepares for his first campaign as head coach.

Strategic Focus on the Defensive Midfield Role

At present, Real Madrid’s roster includes Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Dani Ceballos as natural options for the defensive midfield role. 

While each of these players possesses undeniable talent, their performances over the past twelve months have been marked by inconsistency.

As a result, the club's management is intent on acquiring a new player of world-class caliber to fortify the midfield. The goal is to establish a more stable and commanding presence in front of the defense—an area considered crucial to the tactical structure under Alonso.

Rodri Hernandez Emerges as the Ideal Candidate

According to reports from Diario AS, the player at the top of Real Madrid’s wishlist is Rodri Hernandez of Manchester City. 

The 29-year-old recently made his return to the pitch after being sidelined for nine months due to an ACL injury.

Rodri’s standout performances at the FIFA Club World Cup did not go unnoticed by Real Madrid’s technical staff, who have been closely monitoring his recovery and fitness. 

The club intends to continue observing his form as Manchester City resume competition in the Premier League.

Should Rodri regain top form and opt not to extend his contract with Manchester City, Real Madrid are prepared to launch a formal approach in 2026 to secure his services.

Contingency Plans if Rodri Commits to Manchester City

Although Rodri remains the primary target, there is no certainty that he will be available in the near future. 

The possibility of a contract extension with Manchester City within the next 10 to 12 months cannot be ruled out. In anticipation of such an outcome, Real Madrid have compiled a list of high-profile alternatives.

Among the players under consideration are Nicolo Barella (Inter Milan), Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea), and Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool). 

All three are known for their technical proficiency and tactical intelligence, making them attractive options for Madrid’s midfield reinforcement.

However, their market valuations present a significant obstacle. Each of these players is valued at or above €100 million—a figure that Real Madrid is currently reluctant to pay for a midfielder.

The situation could shift dramatically if Rodri enters the final year of his contract with Manchester City next summer. 

In that scenario, his transfer fee would likely be substantially reduced, making it financially feasible for Real Madrid to sign their preferred candidate without compromising their broader fiscal strategy.
