Mansion Sports - In a significant move that has captured headlines across European football, Kevin De Bruyne has officially revealed the reasons behind his decision to join Serie A side Napoli after ten remarkable years with Manchester City in the Premier League. 

During his introductory press conference with the Italian club, the Belgian midfielder cited a blend of high-level competition and a lifestyle change suited to his family as the key factors that influenced his choice.

Napoli Emerges as the Top Choice Despite Global Interest

De Bruyne was reportedly on the radar of numerous clubs from across Europe, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. However, he ultimately chose Napoli as the next destination in his illustrious career. 

His decision was shaped not only by professional aspirations but also by deeply personal motivations. 

Notably, De Bruyne and his wife were married in the Campania region of Italy — home to Napoli — a connection that gave the move additional emotional weight.

“From a competitive standpoint, this is a very compelling place to be,” De Bruyne stated. “Napoli were champions last season, and they proved their quality. It’s something entirely different from what I experienced in England, and that’s exactly what makes it exciting for me.”

Napoli’s Ambitious Project Captures De Bruyne’s Interest

The 34-year-old midfielder elaborated on how the club’s direct and personal approach played a major role in reigniting his competitive drive. 

According to De Bruyne, a visit from Napoli’s sporting director to England to present the club’s long-term vision was a key turning point.

“When they presented the project, I felt both intrigued and motivated,” he said. “I could see that they were serious about building the future. They’ve already been champions, but they continue to strengthen the team — evidenced by the signing of four to five new players.”

De Bruyne emphasized that despite his age, he still feels capable of performing at the highest level and believes he can meaningfully contribute to Napoli’s ambitions in Serie A and Europe. “I want to help this team grow while also learning from the new style of play and the competitive atmosphere here,” he added.

Wearing the Number 10 Jersey and Honoring Past Glory

In a particularly symbolic gesture, Napoli entrusted De Bruyne with the iconic number 10 jersey — a number previously retired by the club in honor of football legend Diego Maradona. 

The Belgian international expressed his gratitude and humility at being given the opportunity to wear such a historic number, acknowledging the weight of the legacy it carries.

He also took a moment to reflect on his successful tenure with Manchester City, where he won six Premier League titles and played a pivotal role in the club’s domestic and European dominance. 

De Bruyne clarified that his departure from City was not rooted in disappointment, but rather in the desire to embrace a fresh challenge as he enters the twilight of his career.

“I will always be a part of Manchester City,” he noted. “But after everything I’ve accomplished there, I felt it was the right time to seek a new challenge. When I looked at Napoli’s project and the chance to compete at the highest level in Serie A, I knew it was the right decision.”

From Comfort Zone to New Horizons

De Bruyne also shared his perspective on navigating the uncertainty of being a free agent for the first time in his professional life — a stark contrast to his previous summers, which were typically defined by long-term contract stability.

“This was the first time I found myself as a free agent. I’ve always had long-term contracts, so summer was usually calm. This time, it was different — there was uncertainty. But when Napoli came in with a clear and exciting project, I immediately felt it was the best option.”

He concluded his remarks with a resolute commitment to continue performing at the elite level for as long as possible. 

“As long as I’m playing football, I want to get the best out of myself. If the day ever comes when I feel I can’t perform anymore, I’ll reconsider my path. But for now, I’m ready to prove that I can still compete.”
