Gennaro Gattuso Stresses Caution Ahead of Italy’s Clash with Israel
Mansion Sports – The Italian national team continues their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Following a dominant 5-0 victory over Estonia in Gennaro Gattuso’s debut as head coach, the Azzurri are now preparing to face Israel in their second match, which also concludes the September international window.
The Challenge of Facing an In-Form Israel
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Gattuso underlined that the upcoming encounter against Israel would present a different type of challenge compared to Estonia.
“Estonia relied heavily on physicality, while Israel are a side with real quality. They have won six of their last seven matches. They are in strong form and possess great strength in transition. This will certainly not be a straightforward match,” Gattuso stated.
Currently, Israel sit second in Group I behind Norway, while Italy could draw level on points with their opponents if they secure a victory.
Italy’s Focus: Dictating Play and Maximizing Strengths
Gattuso emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency and sticking to their game plan.
“We need to build on the performance we displayed. We must dictate the game, play in their half, and dominate the pitch. As for the formation, we’ll see tomorrow,” he explained.
He also issued a warning regarding Israel’s quick transition play.
“They have agile players who can punish opponents on the counterattack. We’ve been working with two forwards, but what matters most is how we control the game in their territory and manage the flow of play.”
The Role of Substitutes and Squad Depth
Gattuso also praised the contributions of players who came off the bench in the victory against Estonia.
“Credit must go to Cambiaso, Raspadori, and everyone who came on in the second half. They brought fresh energy and a different dynamic. That is a real asset. With this level of squad depth, we can rotate up to 45% and still maintain our quality,” he noted.
Considering the Retegui-Kean Partnership
When asked about the possibility of starting Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean together, Gattuso admitted that it was under consideration.
“They can definitely play together, but the key is balance. Both complement each other well and can add depth to our attacking options. However, the match against Israel will be very different from Estonia, particularly in terms of playing characteristics,” he explained.
Gattuso’s Philosophy: Enthusiasm and a Positive Atmosphere
Gattuso also spoke about the atmosphere within the squad since his appointment.
“Before signing with the FIGC, I already knew the path ahead, whether right or wrong. For me, the key is enthusiasm—coaching them with a smile and without adding unnecessary weight. The players are ready, and now it’s about reaping the results of our work,” he said.
He added that maintaining this positive atmosphere in the long term would be vital.
“It’s easy to say now because it’s only the first week. But if this spirit lasts until June, then we will know we have done a good job,” he concluded.
