Mansion Sports - AC Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri has officially confirmed that Croatian midfield legend Luka Modrić will join the Rossoneri following the conclusion of Real Madrid's campaign at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. 

The announcement puts an end to months of speculation surrounding the veteran’s future and marks the beginning of a new chapter in his illustrious career.

Modrić, who earlier declared his intention to leave Real Madrid after 13 highly decorated seasons, is expected to arrive in Milan this August, adding a wealth of experience and leadership to a squad undergoing significant transformation.

In his first press conference since returning to manage AC Milan, Allegri made it clear that Modrić will be a central figure in his plans for the upcoming season.

“Modrić will arrive in August. He is an extraordinary player,” stated the 57-year-old tactician, who has taken charge for a second spell at the club, replacing Sergio Conceição.

At 39 years old, Modrić recently featured as a substitute in five matches during Real Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign, including their 3–2 quarterfinal victory over Borussia Dortmund, which secured a semifinal berth against Paris Saint-Germain.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or recipient leaves Real Madrid with an incredible haul of 28 trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga championships, having joined the Spanish giants from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.

Despite approaching his 40s, Modrić remains driven by high-level ambitions. One of his key personal goals is to represent Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

His decision to join AC Milan aligns with his desire to continue competing at the top tier of European football in order to stay in peak form for the international stage.

Milan Midfield Reshuffle: Modrić to Fill the Void Left by Reijnders?

Modrić’s arrival comes amid a significant reshuffling of AC Milan’s squad. The club has recently sold midfielder Tijjani Reijnders to Manchester City, while left-back Theo Hernandez completed a transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

These changes have opened up space in the midfield, positioning Modrić to step in as a central figure from the outset. 

His leadership, composure, and vision are expected to bring a stabilizing and influential presence to a Milan team that finished a disappointing eighth in Serie A last season.

Allegri’s Hopes to Retain Key Stars

While Milan has lost several notable players this summer, Allegri remains hopeful about retaining two pivotal members of his current squad—goalkeeper Mike Maignan and forward Rafael Leão.

“Maignan and Leão appear willing to stay with us for next season,” Allegri stated with cautious optimism.

Chelsea had previously shown interest in acquiring Maignan but reportedly failed to meet Milan’s valuation, believed to be around £25 million.

AC Milan will open their 2025/26 Serie A campaign on August 23 with a fixture against Cremonese.
