Alexander Isak Joins Liverpool in Record-Breaking Premier League Transfer

Mansion Sports - Liverpool has officially completed the high-profile signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, setting a new Premier League transfer record with a fee of £125 million (€144.5 million/$169.3 million).

The Swedish striker has agreed to a six-year contract at Anfield, bringing an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his future.

The 25-year-old was Liverpool’s top transfer target throughout the summer, despite Newcastle’s initial rejection of a £110 million bid.

The club insisted their star forward was not for sale. However, Isak expressed his reluctance to continue playing for Newcastle, choosing instead to train with his former club Real Sociedad and missing the team’s first three Premier League matches against Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Leeds United.

The dispute deepened when Isak accused Newcastle on Instagram of breaking promises, prompting the club to respond with a statement clarifying that no such commitments regarding his departure had ever been made.

Shift in Negotiations Following Nick Woltemade’s Arrival

The situation took a decisive turn when Newcastle signed Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £69 million.

With the German striker secured, Newcastle reopened talks with Liverpool, ultimately finalizing the record-breaking deal.

The transfer surpasses Chelsea’s £107 million signing of Enzo Fernández from Benfica in January 2023, according to the BBC.

Alexander Isak Shares His Feelings on the Move

Following the official announcement, Isak expressed his excitement in an interview with Liverpool’s official website.

“I feel incredible. The journey to get here has been long, but I am truly delighted to become part of this team, this club, and everything it represents. It is a source of pride for me, and I cannot wait to begin. I am simply happy that everything is finalized, and I can focus on working hard again. I look forward to meeting my teammates, the fans, and stepping back onto the pitch.”

The Career Journey of Alexander Isak

Isak began his professional career at Swedish side AIK before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

Struggling for minutes in Germany, he was loaned to Eredivisie club Willem II for the 2018–19 season.

In 2019, he moved to Real Sociedad, where he enjoyed four productive seasons in La Liga, scoring 44 goals in 132 appearances and lifting the Copa del Rey in the 2019–20 campaign.

His performances earned him a transfer to Newcastle United in 2022 for £63 million. During his time in England, Isak scored 62 goals in 109 appearances, including a decisive winner in Newcastle’s 2–1 Carabao Cup final triumph over Liverpool in March, securing the club’s first major trophy since 1955.

Isak’s Expected Debut and Liverpool’s Strong Start to the Season

Isak is anticipated to make his Liverpool debut on September 14, when the team faces Burnley after the international break.

Arne Slot’s side has started the 2025–26 Premier League campaign in dominant fashion, securing victories over Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Arsenal in their opening three fixtures.

Meanwhile, Newcastle will aim for their first league victory of the season when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 13.
